Witches And Bitches: Check Your Privilege

Hello everyone! So as promised I am adding another post to this series, and I hope to add more!

Now, it seems like these days, more people are becoming enamoured with the idea of Wicca, Witchcraft and all other similar forms of occultism. That in itself is amazing, and I am extremely happy to see that the stigma around being called a witch and practising witchcraft. However, there is one thing that seems to be ignored in the increase in the people practicing witchcraft: Checking our privilege.

Now I’m sure many people will immediately get defensive when being told to check their privileged, mostly because they refuse to see how their privilege benefits them and allows them to be able to safely call themselves witches. However, it is important that we recognise the different types of privilege each of us have to be able to safely and openly call ourselves witches. Some people ultimately cannot for various reasons.

Whether it is social or familial stigma, or literally the fear of being ostrasised in a community and potentially lynched or murdered, there are people who cannot openly express themselves in that way, and it is very important that we recognise this and build our activism around advocating for such people in every part of the world.

Apart from this, the minorities that you are taking practices from are being exploited and antagonised every single day, and it is the job of those with a louder voice (based on our society) to amplify as many voices who have gone unheard. Therefore, we should be aiming to protect the people who we are learning from by our activism and voices.

I encourage more people to check their privilege. It really is not that hard, and it does not mean that you feel above the people who do not have access to this privilege. Not even only being able to practice witchcraft freely as a form of art, expression or anything else, but being able to exist in an environment where you do not feel antagonised for this form of expression, and your cultural practices. Checking your privilege should not only encourage you to uplift the voices of witches out there who sadly usually fall on deaf ears.

Thank you so much for reading! As usual please leave a like if you enjoyed this post, and let me know in the comments if I have missed anything.

Stay safe xx
